What happens when you get a mosquito bite? You have and allergic reaction. You swell up. The same is true for honey bees. We are all allergic to some extent, because we are sensitive to the venoms of the honey bee, mosquitos, et al. However, some people are deadly sensitive, and they need to know who they are, and take precautions.

Hi Gardeners,
Janaka here. I am proud to announce that AnandaHarvest will have a beekeeping course series beginning in the late winter. Late winter because that is the time to prepare for the Bees in the Spring. There will be 3 class offerings:
Honeybee and Organic Beekeeping 101
Come hear Janaka teach about the endangered honeybee at Ananda Ashram. Learn more about the honeybee crisis, and understand the value of nurturing these amazing creatures.
Planning a Hive for Spring 102
Learn the basics about becoming a beekeeper. Understand the mechanics of a hive, the tools involved, elements of site selection, and an understanding of a naturalist approach to their needs. This is a hands-on workshop, which includes assembling a wooden hive. (Please keep in mind that if you plan on starting a hive in the spring, bees should be ordered by mid-February
Understanding and Caring For the Bees 103
Topics will include: Honeybee health and disease management the natural way; seasonal concerns and methods; as well as imparting the value of respecting the lives and needs of your bees.
The courses will be given over at least one weekend and possibly 2 or 3 weekends.
The total cost of the courses will be in total $185
101-$25
102-$80
103-$80
Tentatively, the date of the course will be February 19, 20 and 21 (Friday-Sunday)
Also as a great incentive to learn beekeeping, we know that many of you live in the city, and it would be challenging to keep honeys where you live. So AnandaHarvest members can sponsor a hive. That means to take the winter courses, purchase the materials and schedule a honeybee delivery for the spring to install the bees. This is a fabulous opportunity to learn about beekeeping by actually doing it. Keep all the beekeeping stuff at the ashram and come and manage YOUR OWN HIVE.
Also, 20% of the proceeds of the course will be donated to AnandaHarvest. The donation will assist in the initiation of this groundbreaking work we will experience in the spring.
